Using Baking Soda to Clean Stains and Odors from Carpets

Tough carpet stains and odors may seem to be immune to all cleaning attempts. However, there is a common household item that can work wonders to remove the odor from pet accidents, the dirt that the kids tracked onto the living room carpet, or the motor oil left on the bottom of your shoes after working on the car. Baking soda can work wonders to restore your dirty, smelly carpets to a clean and fresh state. There are a few simple steps to follow.

Step 1: Vacuum Thoroughly

Thoroughly vacuum the stained area. This will remove any large clumps of dirt or loose fibers that may have taken on an odor. This will prevent any more dirt or loose fibers from getting ground more thoroughly into the carpet from constant foot traffic. It is best to do this as soon as possible after the stain or odor has been discovered. This will increase the chances of removing as much stain and odor as possible.

Step 2: Sprinkle Baking Soda Over the Stained or Smelly Area

Liberally sprinkle baking soda over the area to be cleaned. The active ingredients in baking soda will neutralize and remove any odor. Most commercial carpet odor removers will just mask the odor with a fragrance rather than removing the smell. The odor will most likely return once the fragrance is gone. Additionally, these commercial cleaners may not be safe for pets. Baking soda will not harm pets.

However, if you want to also add a pleasant smell to the carpet, add just a few drops of essential oil to the baking soda and mix well before sprinkling over the carpet. Lavender is a good choice because the scent is not overly intrusive.

Step 3: Let the Baking Soda Absorb the Carpet Odor

Leave the baking soda on the carpet for several hours. The longer it is allowed to sit on the stained area of the carpet, the more of the odor it will be able to absorb. It can even be left overnight for better results.

Step 4: Vacuum Up the Baking Soda

After several hours, vacuum up all of the baking soda. Have the vacuum cleaner on the strongest setting in order to remove any baking soda that may have gotten deep into the carpet. Repeat all steps as needed in order to remove odor entirely.

Step 5: Calling in Professionals
