Removing Blood Stains From Carpet

We highly recommend a deep cleaning to remove blood stains, as they are very difficult to get rid of. However, there are things you can do to minimize the appearance of bloodstains before your scheduled appointment. These tips work best if the bloodstains are fresh (the blood has not dried yet).

DIY Tips

Fresh bloodstains can be sprayed with cold water. The water must be cold. Using hot or even lukewarm water can set the stain permanently in the carpet fibers.

Gently scrub the stain with cold water and a clean rag or a toothbrush. Wipe towards the center of the spill to avoid spreading the stain further. The cloth may need to be changed intermittently. Do not scrub the carpet too hard or it will set the stain.

You may add a bit of liquid laundry detergent or dish soap to the cold water. It probably will not remove the stain entirely, but it will cause it to fade and make it less noticeable until your deep-cleaning appointment. The ratio is about one tablespoon of detergent to every two cups of cold water. Rinse the solution when you are finished.

Ammonia may also be added to cold water. This mixture should not be used on woolen carpets and area rugs. Ammonia will ruin wool. For ammonia solutions, the strength needs to be a little higher; add about one tablespoon of ammonia for every half cup of cold water. Ammonia should not be scrubbed into the carpet, it should be left to sit for a few minutes and then rinsed away.

Saltwater may also be effective. Saltwater mixtures work best if they are thick, more like a paste than a liquid solution. Like the ammonia, it should be left to sit for a few minutes, then rinsed and blotted dry.

If the carpet is white, you may use a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (around 3 percent). Peroxide needs to sit for about an hour to be effective. Do not rub in. Like all other solutions, rinse and blot dry when finished. Hydrogen peroxide is not recommended for colored carpet, as it will lighten the fabric.

The stain may look much lighter when it is dried, but will most likely still be quite visible.
