Carpet Drying Time

Having carpets cleaned, whether by renting a steam cleaner or by hiring professionals, is a big investment of both time and money. Furniture may have to be moved, pets may have to be sequestered to non-carpeted areas, the carpet may have to be first vacuumed, and then there is the actual carpet cleaning itself. Renting a steam cleaner adds expense for both the machine and the cleaning solution, while hiring a professional carpet cleaning company also comes with a price. After all of that, you may be eager to enjoy the clean, beautiful carpeting.

However, there is one final process to follow before walking on the carpet, putting all the furniture back in place, and allowing pets out into the rest of the house. It is very important to allow carpets to dry completely to avoid new spots and and prevent the formation of mold.

How Long Will It Take for the Carpet to Dry?

Drying time can vary anywhere from eight to 24 hours. Temperature, humidity, and air flow will all affect how long it takes for carpets to dry. Running the air conditioner or furnace, depending on the weather, will help reduce drying time by regulating temperature and humidity. Oscillating, ceiling, or box fans in each carpeted room, and opening windows (weather permitting), will help increase air flow to also help the carpet dry more quickly.

What Precautions Should Be Taken While the Carpet Is Drying?

Walking on newly cleaned carpeting: Although the carpet may be safe to walk on before it is completely dry, it is best to only do so with clean, white socks. Shoes or dirty socks may track dirt back onto the clean carpet. Be careful not to slip when moving from a damp carpeted area to a non-carpeted area.

Allowing pets onto clean carpeting: It is best to keep pets off of the carpet until it has dried completely. Indoor-only animals will have less dirty paws than those that are outdoors/indoors. Check the soles of your pets’ paws to make sure they are clean before allowing them out of non-carpeted areas, so as not to introduce dirty cat or dog paw prints back onto freshly cleaned carpets. If the carpet must be left to dry overnight, it might be a good idea to consider boarding pets elsewhere overnight.

Protecting furniture: If furniture is not moved before cleaning the carpet yourself, it is best to place protective, water-resistant blocks underneath (available at hardware stores). Professional cleaners will do this for you, along with placing protective paper over upholstered items. Do not remove any protective blocks or paper before the carpet is completely dry. This will prevent wood stain color transfer from the furniture to the clean carpeting. It will also prevent metal furniture from transferring rust to carpets.
