Carpet Cleaning And Child Safety

It is a fact of life that carpeting and children don’t always work well together. At some point, children will spill juice, drop food, or track mud on a carpet. It can be a full time chore just cleaning up spills and stains on carpets as soon as they happen. Unfortunately, it is another fact of life that you may not necessarily find that juice stain right away, so it may have already set into the carpet. Combine all this with normal carpet wear and tear, pet stains, and adults who also spill drinks and track mud and dirt in, and the result is a dirty, smelly carpet that is in sore need of a good cleaning.

Of course, at the same time, you want a carpet cleaning method that is safe for children, particularly babies and toddlers. But which one will both properly clean carpets and be safe for young family members?

Various Cleaning Methods

  1. Do it yourself: Home spot treatments are great for those stains that you find quickly. Because the stains have not had a chance to work all the way down to the padding underneath the carpeting, most spot treatment methods will work well with little effort.

  2. Rental carpet-cleaners: These are the do it yourself carpet cleaners that can be rented at most grocery stores. These will come with a cleaning solution that is worked into the carpet, before then being sucked back up, along with any dirt, debris, or stains.

  3. Professional carpet cleaning: This method uses industrial-sized carpet cleaning equipment and trained carpet cleaning professionals. They inject hot water and cleaner into the carpet, and then extract the excess water, dirt, and debris with truck vacuums.

Which method is safest For Children?

  1. Do it yourself: Home spot cleaning can be accomplished with common household ingredients that are relatively safe around children, provided the cleaning items are not left unattended. However, this is probably not the best option for cleaning stains that have had a chance to set into the carpet and underneath padding.

  2. Rental carpet cleaners: This cleaning method may seem to strike a good balance between cost and child safety. However, this may not necessarily be the case. The solution that is used to clean the carpet may very well not be hypo-allergenic. Because these cleaners will not work as well as professional vacuums to remove all the cleaning solution, residue may remain. If your child walks or lies on the carpet, they may develop an allergic reaction to the cleaner. The most common signs of this will be a rash, redness, or blisters where the skin has come in contact with the carpet. It may also cause sneezing, coughing, or irritated eyes.

  3. Professional carpet cleaning: Although it may seem as though professional carpet cleaning is expensive, compared to do it yourself or rental options, the truth is that it is the best possible choice for both effectively cleaning carpets and protecting your family’s health. All American Carpet & Tile only uses “green” products that are hypo-allergenic, nontoxic, colorless, and free of soaps, odors, and volatile organic compounds. This means that your family will not only be able to enjoy the beauty of clean carpeting, but won’t suffer any ill physical effects from the cleaning process.
